Revolver

Ok, so I essentially have no time to update this page right now…

My time has been [almost] completely taken over working on Revolver stuff: http://www.revolver-magazine.com.

It’s an entertainment site for Santiago, Chile - covering the music, arts, and culture scenes.

Health Hazards

Chile No Comments »

As a service to those interested in coming to Santiago for an extended period of time, I have identified the following things as being extremely hazardous to your health:

1. Pollution.

Interestingly enough, I haven’t been that affected by the ever-present smog/pollution/haze-of-death. I was walking down the street with someone and they made a comment about how bad the pollution was that day - I hadn’t even noticed. This may be saying something about my hometown (Miami) or the sorry state my lungs are in (or both). The publisher for the “paper” has been living here for 20+ years and mentioned his concern about the effects the pollution may be having on his body. My guess is that his lifespan has been shortened by at least 5 years. I kept this thought to myself.

Jorge Gonzalez

Jorge Gonzalez - Blondie, Santiago, Chile - July 5, 2008

I finally have my new camera! Canon Rebel Xsi. The difference is amazing… really amazing. I just couldn’t take any decent shots in low-light conditions with the other one (see pics I took at the Miss Garrison show). Anyways I got a chance to test it out during the weekend - first night was a bust but I finally figured out how to use it (more or less) at the Jorge Gonzalez show.

Now to test it out during Tuesday’s student/teacher protest. If it gets damaged or stolen I’m leaving Chile ;-)

Street Protests - Santiago

2 guys

Chile seems to be experiencing quite a bit of civil unrest these days, mostly related to the educational system and calls by both student and teacher groups for major reforms. All of this is in addition to an ongoing strike by truck drivers that has already left some parts of the country with supply worries. What makes this all the more interesting is the violence that accompanies many of these demonstrations. Whether it’s an attempt to block main avenues, delinquents throwing objects at officers, or just overall disorder, at some point things always seem to culminate in a confrontation with the police. Innocent bystanders (as well as crazy foreigners taking pictures and looking for trouble) sometimes get hurt.

So far I’ve been gassed, barely doused by a water cannon, and smacked in the head by a rock - an incident that resulted in a trip to the emergency room and one stitch to the forehead.

I just wrote about the insanity of the metro system a little while ago.  I’ll attempt to elaborate and provide some useful information for anyone visiting Chile.

I do this after squeezing into what became one hell of a rare sight tonight at the Escuela Militar bus stop: a route 406 bus.

Blondie

Chile No Comments »

I already have a little blurb somewhere else about Blondie!  In any case, Blondie was once again the destination of choice Friday night for their “Brit pop” dance party.  I somehow managed to exceed my clubbing budget the last time around (2 cab rides, cover charge, and many, many Coronas) so I figured I would make an attempt to save some cash by taking the metro instead of a cab.
